I really appreciate Matthew John's approach in this book. He looks at 5 major religions of the world – Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism, Buddhism, and Christianity. It gives a basic understanding of each of the religions, as well as the history of it, and also specifically what perspective that religion has about Jesus Christ and what might be “redemptive analogies” within that religion that would naturally interest them in Christ or the gospel. I appreciate that Matthew John highlights the positive or good things about different religions - not what different religions might have in common, but the unique history, practices, or beliefs of a religion that are admirable or helpful. In many cases, it is hard to generalize about what adherents of a given religion believe or practice (e.g. the many different beliefs or perspectives within Islam or Christianity), but the author does a good job of giving an overview and mentioning those differences without going into too many details. I also appreciate the many personal examples of interactions with people of different religions - that makes the book engaging and personal, so it does not read like a textbook. the final part of the book looks at Christianity, and especially who Christ is and how the doctrine about the deity and identity of Christ was formed. I found this to be very helpful and enlightening, and appreciated the way that he synthesized the writings of other scholars and historical events and perspectives to give us a basic understanding of various perspectives about Christ as well as contrasting that with the orthodox Christian doctrine.I just learned that the book has been re-released with a new title, The Wise Men and the Unknown God...so check out the book there.

This book takes us on a journey written from the author's perspective and reveals details that are so relevant to us today. Seeing a recurring theme in the various religions makes one wonder about the truly significant impact that one man made over 2000 years ago.
A different perspective but important nonetheless
It was part of a Bible study and was very informative. I recommend the book for those considering world religions and God's response.

If we are to love our neighbor — especially at this contentious moment in history — we must build bridges. This book, creatively crafted in the form of a personal narrative, is an accessible and expertly-formed tool for that bridge-building.
This book provides fascinating insights in a limitless God who exists beyond the boundaries we draw within religions.
Mathew John examines the various attributes of God and brings together a compelling picture of a Savior that we all need. I love the simplicity in its presentation of the major faiths. You will find yourself amazed finding a Redeemer who has been in plain sight all this while.

This book is a must read for all who wish to clearly, graciously, and articulately engage in fruitful discussions with persons of other faith world views. The author's ability to weave together a coherent glimpse of Jesus, that is shadowed within so many of the world's religious beliefs is fantastic. The book has helped prepare me to make friends with many who live in a different culture-faith than I do.
Mathew John explores the great faiths that make up the religions of the world. He also creates a clear and concise understanding of each religion's view of Jesus. He begins with the story of St. Caspar, the legendary "wise man" that follows the Star of Bethlehem to worship the newly born king. Along the way, he joins Persian and Babylonian scholars who form the traditional cohort described in the Gospel of Matthew that bring the new king three gifts. It is ironic that the first men to worship Jesus were neither Jew nor Christian, but Hindu, Babylonian and Persian. The book provides an understanding of each religion and its relevance in light of the Gospel. This parallax is useful in that, it helps the reader see the areas of overlap and contrast when viewed through the lens of his or her own experience.
